Austria tonight abolished border controls with Slovakia, introduced last September due to increased trafficking of illegal migrants and the fact that the Czech Republic also introduced controls on the Czech-Slovak border.
Austria justified the control of the border crossings by the actions of the Czech Republic, as the Austrian side was willing to act in sync with the Czech side, the statement said. The Czech Republic introduced the border controls at the end of September arguing for a more effective fight against traffickers. According to Slovakia, this action was not justified since, according to the Ministry of the Interior, 24 traffickers operating from Slovakia have been caught since the end of September.
From today, Austria is introducing increased border security. Priority measures are planned, patrolling the areas with mixed teams from both countries and the inclusion of drones in the surveillance. Austria’s Interior Minister Gerhard Karner said that in this way precise surveillance could be carried out if necessary to react quickly.
